T308 - Marine Terrace progress update

Contract T308 is for the construction of Marine Terrace station and tunnels towards Siglap station. The contract was awarded to a joint venture between Ssangyong Engineering & Hyundai Engineering. Both contractors had previously completed stations along the Downtown Line, with Ssangyong completing Little India and Rochor stations while Hyundai delivered MacPherson station.

For this contract, the station box is built using top-down cut-and-cover method. As such, the site has undergone numerous traffic diversion schemes since construction began in 2016. Diaphragm walls need to be installed around the perimeter of the station site before excavation can begin. The contract also will see the utilisation of 2 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the construction of bored tunnels to Siglap station under contract T309, approximately 1.3km east.

Traditionally, the TBMs are assigned names. As part of stakeholder engagement, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) engages schools in the vicinity in naming competitions for students to come up with creative names for the machines. For contract T308, the students of CHIJ Katong Convent were invited to contribute suggestions for names. As part of the competition, the students were requested to provide names of female saints. The winning names are Saint Joan of Arc for the Woodlands-bound machine and Saint Barbara for the Changi-bound machine.

The launch shaft for the machines was completed and a noise enclosure built around it to minimise noise disturbance to the surrounding developments. Tunneling operations have since begun, with the ground observation post for the Woodlands bound tunnel visible just outside CHIJ Katong Convent's bus stop.

bound tunnel. The TBM is currently at ring 66.
Over on the western end of the station, work on exits E and F as well as the connecting subway are on-going. Concrete pours have been noted on the site and if one were to walk past, you would be able to get a sneak peek into portions of the excavated box below.
