T302 - Founders' Memorial update Q2 2023 & GBME Shaft

2 July 2023 - An aerial view of the contract T302 work site for Founders' Memorial station.

During the release of images by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) phase 4 stations, contract T302's Founders' Memorial station was omitted from the update. This is likely due to the fact that Founders' Memorial was originally intended to be a shell station for fit out at a later stage. As such, its full construction was brought forward to tie in with the opening of the memorial. In lieu of an official update, we bring to you an interim update from July 2023 - sufficiently near enough to June to be considered as a late Q2 2023 update. As an added bonus, we're also covered the Gardens by the Bay Marina East escape shaft in this post.

Station buildings
The station facility buildings are beginning to show their architectural elements with the installation of cladding on the exit building exteriors and ceiling panels on the interiors. When compared to other TEL4 stations, the progress of works is definitely behind. However, as this station is not expected to be operational within the next few years, the progress of work is understandable.

Both station exits have progressed onto architectural fit out works. Stone and aluminium cladding are being applied to the exterior of the station exit buildings. There still remains some way to go as it is likely that the cladding works have only begun recently. Apart from works on the station's exterior, work is progressing with the installation of ceiling panels on the interior. Elements of the lifts are also largely installed with the door frames and LED indicators installed.

GBME escape shaft
The Gardens by the Bay Marina East shaft was constructed on top of a former circular launch and retrieval shaft built under contract T228 for the construction of Gardens by the Bay (Bay South) station and tunnels. The shaft was subsequently handed over to the contractor for contract T302 who performed backfilling and shaft closing works. The end result is an escape shaft that would allow evacuees to reach the surface quickly should an emergency arise in the tunnels between the two stations, which are in close proximity to a deep body of water - the Marina Reservoir.

Works at the GBME shaft are complete and the area has been reopened to public use. What remains to mark the area is the completed escape shaft box. Do you know where other escape shafts are located? Let us know in the comments section if you do.
