We are back for your regular dose of Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) Thursdays. Hope your week has been good just as the progress has been steady on stage 4 of the line. This time, we're over at Tanjong Rhu to check things out as of Q1 2023. Did you know that contract T303 also includes the construction of the 66kV substation? This provides power supply for the line and enables the trains to receive power so that they can move from station to station. Typically such substations are located within depot sites but occasionally, additional support is required along the line.

23 February 2023 - Preparation works ahead of the lane's reopening.

23 February 2023 - New permanent bus stop to replace the current one
outside Tanjong Ria condominium.

23 February 2023 - Road surfacing works ongoing outside the Casuarina condominium.

A series of traffic diversions & road closures are anticipated to take place in March. As of the time of writing, the first stage of traffic diversion for Q1 2023 should already be in effect. This entails opening up a portion of Tanjong Rhu Lane, near the Camelot condominium that previously used to be a cul de sac, and turning it into a junction with Tanjong Rhu Road. This allows condominium residences to have access whilst the portion of road near the station is closed during stage 1 of the diversions.

Stage 2 will see the temporary bus stops outside Tanjong Ria condominium being shifted to permanent ones along Tanjong Rhu Road, now located outside the Camelot condominium instead. A portion of Tanjong Rhu Road south of the station will be closed off as well, with traffic accessing Rhu Cross and areas further west via Tanjong Rhu Lane which will be opened to connect across the length of the station to Tanjong Rhu Road. It remains to be seen if this will be the final road layout within Tanjong Rhu as the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) maps on the masterplan show the retention of the square around the station's Exit 1 on the southern side.

The eastern half of Exit 1 has also been clad with granite cladding in a light grey colour. The western side on the other hand still remains as the bare structural concrete. Works are nonetheless progressing beyond structural completion to fit out of the architectural elements.

Exit 2 (Northern side)

23 February 2023 - The metal frame for the roof clearly visible at Exit 2.

Meanwhile, work at Exit 2 is still focused on the metal roof frame rather than cladding. These will serve to shelter commuters walking around the periphery of the station exit to get to the stadium district or neighbouring condominiums in the area. Cladding work has commenced here in small quantities, however the works are still largely focused on the roofing.

Ancillary building (South of Exit 1)

23 February 2023 - The southern wall of the ancillary building.

23 February 2023 - Ancillary building western wall.

In close proximity to Exit 1, slight south, is an ancillary building for the station. Works here are focused on cladding and louvre installation to allow ventilation for the support equipment installed within. Cladding is most advanced on the southern and eastern walls of the ancillary building, whilst the western and northern walls still show the bare concrete structure.

Ventilation Shaft

23 February 2023 - The eastern wall of the ventilation building. Cladding works are almost
complete on this wall.

The station's ventilation shaft's eastern wall is the most complete with most of the cladding work on this wall completed. Condenser units can be seen already installed with further cladding works also taking place on the southern wall.

Road reinstatement

23 February 2023 - Ongoing hacking works.

23 February 2023 - Hacking works serve to demolish the temporary
retaining structures.

23 February 2023 - Road reinstatement works near Exit 2.

23 February 2023 - Road reinstatement works near Exit 1. This section will be paved and opened
to traffic in late March.

23 February 2023 - Railings for the staircase on site awaiting installation.

As the construction of the station structure is largely completed, works now shift towards architectural finishes, fittings & systems installation and road reinstatement. If you haven't already done so, you can drop by the JRL Construction blog as we delve into the stages in the construction of an elevated line. Whilst most of the activities covered under each section pertain to the building of a line that is above ground, the stages of construction remain consistent throughout regardless of whether the system is elevated or underground. Do drop by to check the series out and participate in the SgMC Facebook giveaway.

Back at Tanjong Rhu, work is underway to demolish any temporary structures installed to retain & stabilise earth during the initial construction stages. This is especially apparent with the works taking place outside the Waterbay condominium. Within the station site proper, machines can be seen preparing the roadways for paving. This also ties in with the upcoming stage 2 traffic diversion towards the end of the month. Station fittings such as the railings for staircases can be seen on site as well, pending for installation once the tiling works are completed.

Overall, works are progressing into the systems installation work category and soon, one should be able to see the interior fittings such as lighting, passenger information displays and signage appearing ahead of the testing & commissioning phase.
